My letter to the editor of the St. Cloud [MN] Times

As a native Minnesotan who grew up in St. Cloud, I have been following the discussion regarding a constitutional amendment defining marriage as a union between a man and a woman. The amendment is an attempt to institutionalize and legalize discrimination into a document that was designed to do exactly the opposite. I believe this is a move by a group of politicians desperate for power and that the people of Minnesota are wise and enlightened enough to vote down such an appalling amendment.

What saddens me most is that the primary sponsor of this legislation, Steve Gottwalt, represents the people of my home town. On Mr. Gottwalt’s website (http://www.stevegottwalt.com), he states: “I believe we live in a land of freedom and opportunity; not entitlement,” and “I believe government has an important, but limited, role in meeting our needs and wants.” [Emphasis added]

Mr. Gottwalt’s sponsorship of this issue shows he is willing to set aside his own beliefs when self-serving interests are in play. His willingness to write hatred and discrimination into a document that was intended to protect the people against such ills demonstrates that he is not the type of leader Minnesotan’s deserve.

Amending the constitution to discriminate against any Minnesotan is something I urge all voters to respond to with a firm “no.” When the opportunity presents itself, send Mr. Gottwalt a message that the days of self-serving politicians are in the past. Vote no on the constitutional amendment, and cast your vote for Mr. Gottwalt’s opponent.

Sincerely,
Kyle Smith
